I REALLY liked this camera. Over the last five years, I've found that Panasonic and Sony are really the two brands you need to look at for high-quality, easy-to-use, mid-size cameras. Sure, Canon and Nikon continue to battle it out for full-frame supremacy. And Fuji has come in with some excellent manual models. But Sony and Panasonic are arguably the best at beginner-friendly, high-quality snappers.
Sony's 20-megapixel a5000 is a good example of why this is the case. Despite coming with most mod cons you could imagine – including a flip-out 'selfie' screen and instant photo transfer to phones and tablets (via an app) – it takes some really excellent photos.
Part of this is down to the (detachable) 16mm-50mm lens, which gives a lovely range for landscape and portrait shots. But some of the credit goes to the impressive sensor the camera uses. You can also upgrade to a big zoom lens.
If you're looking for easy-to-use sophistication at a fairly reasonable price, this is probably it.
