Silicon Valley CEO and husband of Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, Dave Goldberg, died after falling off a treadmill, according to a state official.

A Mexican state official said SurveyMonkey CEO Mr Goldberg died of severe head trauma after the tragic incident.

Goldberg was found lying next to a treadmill on Friday at a $5,000-a-night resort near Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

The official said he left his room at about 4pm to exercise, and family members went to look for him after he didn't return.

He was found at about 6.30pm lying by a treadmill in a pool of blood, with a blow to the lower back of his head.

He apparently had slipped on the treadmill and hit the machine.

Efforts to revive Mr Goldberg were unsuccessful.

It is not known if his wife, Ms Sandberg, was on holidays with her 47-year-old husband at the time.

The couple married in 2004.

Many of those who have paid tribute to Mr Goldberg are bosses at some of the world's biggest tech firms.

Goldberg last year spoke at the Web Summit in Dublin.
