Paranoid Android: Sony's slick TV could do with apps
Sony X85 Android TV Price: €3,500 Rating: ***
Back In January, Sony dropped a bombshell: it was replacing its own 'smart' TV operating system with Android. It was a bold, exciting move. But the X85 shows that it is still at an early stage.
Bluntly, there are hardly any apps available for this thing beyond the ones you'd expect (YouTube, Google Play Movies and one or two more). There's no Sky, UPC, RTE Player or any of the others available for your Android phone or tablet.
There's little doubt that this will change, but right now it's in its infancy. Happily, there are plenty of other reasons to like the X85.
The picture quality on the 65-inch screen is just stunning, not because of its onboard 4K (of which there's hardly anything to watch) but because of the latest engine upgrades that Sony has put in.
It's also astonishingly thin - under half a centimetre at its slimmest point. And the audio quality is a little better than usual (speakers on TVs are usually quite poor). This all adds up to a price that is beyond the budget of most.
But if you can afford it, this is up there with the best tellies you can currently buy.
