A US security company who came under criticism for portraying the Irish as the leading nation for beer drinking and binge drinking has withdrawn the poster that set off the controversy.
Trend Micro which employs 200 people in its Cork headquarters tweeted a colourful infographic called ‘How to protect your phone from a St Patrick’s Day disaster’ which offers advice on avoiding phone theft while intoxicated.
The infographic uses leprechauns to represent the Irish and wrongfully describes Ireland as “the world’s biggest beer drinking nation”, despite OECD figures showing that Irish people consume less beer than countries such as Germany, Austria and Belgium.
A spokesperson for Trend Micro told the Sunday Independent that the infographic has now been withdrawn from all social media platforms.
They added that the poster was meant to be light hearted but acknowledged that it contained inaccurate information about Ireland being the leading country for drinking beer.
