Nike announces FuelBand smart wristband to track your activity levels

NIKE has announced a new data-tracking wristband that it says will help people to become more active.
The Nike+ Fuelband is a wristband that uses an accelereometer to track the wearer's activities throughout the day. It can measure time, steps, calories and something called "NikeFuel" which the company says "is a normalized score that awards equal points for the same activity regardless of physical makeup."
At the announcement in New York yesterday, Lance Armstrong, the former professional cyclist, said: “What’s great about the idea of NikeFuel and the FuelBand is the way it provides real information and numbers to show how much people are doing all day, every day.
"That’s what will get people challenging themselves to do more and better their own scores. It’s a tool to get people more active.”
Users of the FuelBand can set daily targets for their activity. As they near their goal the LED display on the wristband will turn from red to green. Users can also upload their data to the Nike+ website via a USB connection or sync with an iPhone app via Bluetooth.
The idea is similar to the JawBone UP, a wristband released last year which tracks activity and also monitors sleep patterns. However, the UP wristband was withdrawn temporarily at the end of last year after users complained about hardware failures. It is expected to go on sale again later this year.
