Half of Virgin Media's 330,000 Irish television subscribers can now watch Netflix directly from their TV menu.

The service, which can also be subscribed to directly in the TV system, is now available on channels 300 and 999.

There's no extra cost, although it's only available to Virgin Media's Horizon TV customers, which number around half of its Irish television base.

Virgin Media says that Ireland is the first country to get the service "as part of Liberty Global’s new partnership with Netflix which will lead to the roll out of the app to customers in more than 30 countries around the world".

However, Netflix is already available to customers of Virgin Media in the UK through its Tivo box subscriptions.

“This brings your Netflix streaming subscription straight onto your TV," said Paul Farrell, vice president at Virgin Media .

"Netflix is even better when you can watch it seamlessly on Virgin Media’s Horizon TV service or you can watch it on any device anytime, anywhere you can get online.”
