Google Inc., seeking to expand further beyond its Internet search engine, released a test version of the Picasa photo-editing software for Macintosh computers.

The free program is available today for download, Google said on its Web site. Until now, Picasa only worked with computers running the Windows and Linux operating systems.

Google, which makes almost all of its revenue from advertising, is developing more products -- from online video chat to Internet file storage -- to attract more visitors. The Mac version of Picasa, which lets users manage, edit and share their photos, offers an alternative to Apple’s own iPhoto program.

Google, based in Mountain View, California, rose $6.73 to $328.05 today in Nasdaq Stock Market trading. The shares lost 50 percent of their value in the past year. (Bloomberg)
