Sony has announced 5.3 million PS4 units had been sold by February 8, ahead of the console's much-anticipated launch in its native country Japan on February 22.
Sony had forecast to sell five million units by the end of March, and given the advances figures It's likely 10 million PS4s will be sold by the end of the year.
Last year UK games industry body UKIE announced the PS4's launch had eclipsed the record set eight years previously by the PSP, making the console the fastest selling ever in the UK. It was also the top-selling console in the United States throughout January.
Sony Computer Entertainment group CEO and president Andrew House said he was "thrilled" by the sales figures.
