VIDEOGAMES giant Electronic Arts has dropped world No 1 Tiger Woods after 15 years, becoming the latest company to end their commercial relationship with the golfer.
Woods lent his name to the multi-millions Tiger Woods PGA Tour game series – with some estimates reckon earned EA more than €560m over the years.
However, Woods’ troubled personal life has triggered several of his long-term sponsors to reconsider their association after revelations of his extra-marital affairs in 2009. Among those cancelled include deals with Accenture, AT&T, Gatorade and Tag Heuer.
Woods's agent, Mark Steinberg, said: "We had an incredible run. Outside of [John] Madden, you would be hard pressed to find a sports figure that meant as much to a video game company as Tiger meant to EA. But times are changing and EA had to re-evaluate the partnership and frankly so did we."
“We've always been big fans of Tiger and we wish him continued success in all his future endeavors,' said EA vice-president and general manager Daryl Holt.
EA had long stood by the American, although they did begin to put other stars such as Rory McIlroy on the cover of the latest games.
Woods now has just two sponsors from the highs of 2009 - Nike and plane-sharing company NetJets.
