Eircom to hire up to 375 graduates and apprentices
Eircom has announced a plan to hire up to 375 people through graduate and apprentice programs over the next five years, with an intention to keep “top performers” on permanently.
The move will mainly target technician and technical support roles and is part of an €18m investment in new staff, according to the company’s chief executive, Richard Moat.
The new jobs will be divided into annual intakes of 75 apprentices and graduates over five years, according to the company. 60 apprentices will train with the company while 15 graduates per year will commence a two-year course under the company’s guidance.
Eircom says that “top performers” in the apprentice program will be kept on, while it expects most of the graduates to be retained also.
However, Eircom is also expected to see some technical staff retire during the same period of time.
“We are the only company in the telecommunications sector investing in people at scale, providing excellent sustainable employment,” said Mr Moat.
“This is a key element in the ongoing transformation of the group. These programmes are an integral part of our growth strategy. All of the 375 apprentices and graduates who come into the company over the next five years will be working as part of our team either on the frontline building Ireland’s communications network or providing innovative new products and services to our growing customer base.”
Eircom is currently expanding its fibre-connected broadband business in Ireland, The company says that it has passed 1.1m homes and business from an overall goal of 1.6m premises. The company says it will bid for the National Broadband Plan tender, a state-subsidised scheme that promises to connect all of Ireland’s rural 700,000 homes and businesses to fibre broadband by 2020.
Eircom says that its apprentice program is open to candidates who have passed their Leaving Certificate. This year’s programme will commence in September, it says, and applicants will work as customer technicians where “the primary focus will be on the maintenance and repair of equipment in Eircom’s network”.
Successful applicants will also receive a Level 6 FETAC Telecommunications Access Networks Technology Major award, the company said. Following the successful completion of each two year programme, “top performers will be offered full-time roles” with the company.
