Eir will include six sports channels, including BT Sport, for free with its broadband packages as an incentive to drive subscriptions.

The move will see 42 English Premier League matches as well as all Champions League matches and Europa League matches made available to Eir broadband customers for free. Formula 1 races will also be included in the deal.

The company has also announced that it secured the broadcasting rights to the 2019 rugby World Cup.

Called Eir Sport, the initiative could accelerate so-called 'cord cutting' among Irish television subscribers where households start to watch video and movies solely over broadband services rather than through conventional TV subscriptions.

"Now we are giving premium sports content to all 370,000 of our broadband customers.," said Jon Florsheim, head of Eir's consumer division. "Not only does this provide customers with quality content, we are also letting customers choose how they want to watch that content either at home on the TV or on the go via the eir Sport app."
