Budget tablet is a disappointing smudge magnet

Asus Memo Pad

Price: €180 (3 stores in Ireland)

OH dear. I like to give budget Android tablets a go, especially as this is what families find they can afford for kids' birthdays and Christmas gifts. But the Memo Pad from Asus is a bad return for the money.

It has the basics covered, with Play Store access, reasonable power and two cameras. But as an overall experience, I found it poor from start to finish. The screen, which has a decent level of resolution, is the worst smudge magnet I've ever experienced. Within 10 minutes there were so many fingerprints on it that it resembled a prop from 'CSI Miami'.

The styling of the device, too, screams 'cheap': there's none of the svelte, ergonomic feel of some other mid-level tablets out there.

It is incredible to think that this is the same company that, for just about €50 more, gives us the superb, best-in-class Nexus 7 tablet. It's like Audi offered 25pc off one of its cars, which turned out to be a Fiat Panda.
