Bill Gates, the founder of Windows-maker Microsoft, has launched a personal website for the first time, and is billing it as "An inside look at global matters".

In his greeting to new users of GatesNotes.com, he writes “since leaving my fulltime job at Microsoft to dedicate more time to our [charitable] foundation, a lot of people have asked me what I'm working on. I'm fortunate because the people I'm working with and learning from are true experts in their fields. I take a lot of notes [and] I thought it would be interesting to share these conversations more widely with a website.”

He goes on to say that his hope is that the site will “get more people thinking and learning about the issues I think are interesting and important.”

The move, following on from the billionaire’s Twitter debut yesterday, marks the beginning of his concerted effort to develop an online persona that will connect with users in a way that corporations have never been able to master. Themes include sustainability, the recent earthquake in Haiti, global pandemics and education reform.

The topics on GatesNotes.com are grouped into “What I’m Thinking About”, “What I’m Learning”, “My Travels” and “Curious Classroom". Gates has also reviewed Steven Levitt and Stephen Dubner’s latest book on economics, “Super Freakonomics”.
