Bank of Ireland College Green - Shares in the bank surged this week.

BANK of Ireland is working on correcting multiple debits that were accidentally charged to some customers’ accounts last night.

The bank said it was aware that a number of debits are displaying twice on customers’ accounts as a result of an error.

The duplicate charges relate to Visa Debit transactions.

It said these will be adjusted shortly.

The bank did not specify what caused the glitch.

This is not the first time an Irish bank has had a problem with duplicate debiting. In a previous incident of debit duplications by a different bank, customers were warned by consumer groups to make sure they were not charged a penalty fee if the duplicate pushed their account into overdrawn status.

Bank of Ireland said no fees will be charged in relation to the duplication.
