Apple has bought motion capture company Faceshift, whose technology has been used to give alien characters realistic facial expressions in the new Star Wars film.

Apple confirmed the acquisition to Tech Crunch, saying: "Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans.”

Faceshift had been rumoured to be on Apple's radar for some time.

The price of the deal was not disclosed.
