Web problems 'are holding back our SMEs'

SMALL and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) are being held back from building their businesses online by a lack of infrastructure, according to one technology giant.

Google says many business owners either lack the knowledge to create a significant online presence or are held back by a lack of broadband in their area.

Speaking at Google's European headquarters in Dublin, Ronan Harris, Google's director of online sales and operations, said that an online presence was essential for SMEs to succeed in this economy.

"As money gets tighter, people look online for the best value when they are looking to purchase goods," he said.

"Unfortunately for Ireland, however, the lack of broadband access around the country is still a huge cause for concern.

"Access to broadband is vital and although we're catching up, our infrastructure is still not advanced enough for a 'smart economy'," Mr Harris added.

"Until the entire country has access to fast, reliable broadband, businesses will continue to suffer."
