READY BUSINESS PODCAST: ‘What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail?’ Paul Gleeson who rowed the Atlantic on mental strength in business
“I’ve always been fascinated by why we do what we do and why some get stuck and others don’t,” explains adventurer and performance consultant, Paul Gleeson of Turas Consulting, on this week’s Ready Business podcast.
“We all go through experiences in life where who you are changes and evolves. I had been working as a tax consultant but wanted something more. I wanted to do something and so while travelling in New Zealand decided I’d cycle across Australia. Just like that!”
"That Australian adventure became the real catalyst for change for me when I grew into myself more. The Paul on the bike in Perth had shifted and changed to the one who arrived in Sydney months later.”
Cycling across Australia wasn’t enough for Gleeson’s adventurer spirit however and subsequent trips have included rowing across the Atlantic and navigating the Arctic.
And it’s this mental toughness, resilience and fortitude that sees him working with and advising individuals and companies.
“One of my biggest fears in life is to ever meet the person I could have been,” he says. “Trying to row the Atlantic was nothing to do with being able to row or ocean skills, it was all about mental strength.”
“I grew up with my Mom telling me that there is no such thing as ‘can’t’ and that has always stayed with me. I'm curious about life, and finding out about life. One of the biggest issues I find with clients is they have a feeling of being stuck in a rut and motivating themselves to push on.”
“I’m a firm believer in positive psychology which focuses on the strengths that lights people up, getting people to work on those things that invigorate them."
"We can be too much in our heads and not doing enough around what’s our passion. I always ask people: What would you do if you knew you couldn’t fail? Have you got the courage to take a leap into the unknown?”
