READY BUSINESS PODCAST: 'Skills can be learned but attitude and positivity trumps every time'

Returning to work in January can be a difficult time. Many people are feeling glum and miserable and questioning where their future lies. But change is in your hands and it’s up to you what you want to do and where you want to go, says Mairead Fleming of Ascension Executive Recruitment, on this week’s Ready Business podcast.

“You’re the one in control, you’re not stuck – no matter what you think,” she says. “It’s up to you, not your boss or your spouse. Only you can do something about it. But first, ask yourself, do you really want to change? Take time and consider your options. Make sure it’s not a knee jerk reaction.”

“Or why not spend some money with a career counsellor so you’re exploring what’s really right for you. You don’t want to go from the frying pan into the fire if the next job isn’t for you.”

The first, and most important step you can take, advises Fleming, is to surround yourself with positive people and block out the negative ones. If moving jobs is not an option, look beyond the office. Get involved socially or take part in hobbies and sports outside of work that become a welcome distraction so you have something at the end of the day to look forward to. Take control. It’s in your hands.

“This is about you and you have to take control. If there’s no opportunity where you are and if your skill-set is limited, then do upskill and identify courses and skills that will give you the freedom to look around.”

“Skills can be learned but attitude and positive approach trumps every time. It’s about being positive, upbeat and showing you’re willing to learn, progress and develop. Employers hire attitude over technical skill.”

So how can you survive the January blues?

“It’s not going to happen overnight to get your dream job,” cautions Fleming. “Get to the next weekend, take bite-sized steps, plan little things to look forward. But if you are going to leave, commit to it, meet recruitment agencies, work on your CV and before you know it, you’re into February already!”
