READY BUSINESS PODCAST: 'Michael O'Leary told me the secret to his success'
In this week’s Ready Business podcast, Brian Purcell speaks to Liam Holton who was ten years with Punchestown Racecourse as Sales & Marketing Manager before the idea for Future Ticketing to take on Ticketmaster was born.
“My ten years at Punchestown was a brilliant experience and included selling the first sponsorship to Michael O’Leary and Ryanair. ‘There’s only two reasons people buy tickets online,’ he told me. ‘Either it’s going to be more expensive tomorrow or it’s not going to be there tomorrow’. That's pretty much the secret O’Leary told me and we’ve built our Future Ticketing software around that principle from day one.”
Th idea for Future Ticketing came about when he realised that clients were handing over control to third parties.
“Why were customers all being pushed to a third party to buy tickets when it should be the companies who are selling to their own customers that should be doing it? Ticketing should be an enabling service for the clients and for their customers."
After 18 months of bootstrapping and adding clients slowly but surely, Holton was able to leave his job and strike out on his own.
"It go to the stage where I had to make the jump to really make it work. It was now or never. You have days when you do wonder what you’re doing but there’s three of us in it to keep the others going. Ultimately though we do have a better product and we believe in it."
Plus, he’s done it all from the midlands in Tullamore as well, not competing with the Dublin tech scene.
First clients included the Book of Kells, The Little Museum, Galway Races, Punchestown Races which all proved the product worked and worked well. They’re adding clients each week now and have just closed a funding round to enable future development.
