“I never wanted a career and always just wanted to do something interesting. My love of story dragged me into many different places. We are just pieces of our stories and I’m a mish-mash of 39 years of stories.”

Francis Fitzgibbon has had a varied career in politics, media and PR, prior to setting up StoryStock in 2016. His career included work as a political researcher, work in the European Parliament, as a bar owner, radio producer, documentary maker and freelance journalist.

But it was sitting in a bar in Brussels when he realised what he wanted to do as he tells Brian Purcell on this week’s Ready Business podcast.

“Working as a radio producer, I was speaking to people with fascinating stories all the time and I had this idea for collecting them together.”

StoryStock is an online repository for freelance journalists, videographers, writers and artists who have a chance to see their work licensed, and works with brands looking for authentic content.

“StoryStock is now building the world’s largest database of storytellers from Ireland, the US and even countries as far afield as Ghana. Those stories are then licensed to broadcasters, media organisations and brands around the world because there is a demand for more and more authentic stories from the hearts of communities. Stories are a great way to sell ideas. Authenticity beats polish.”

With Enterprise Ireland funding and a base from the Technology Park in Tralee, StoryStock has been listed as one to watch, with more and more brands looking to tap into real-life stories. This has been the culmination of all of Fitzgibbon’s work thus far as he seeks to build a global story-tellers’ repository.

“I left a good, well-paying job but I’ve nothing to lose and that’s the way you have to be to succeed in life.  If you believe in the idea you will get there in the end.  From a pub in Brussels to working with global brands you just keep driving on to make it happen.”
