IF you can't afford a car but need one to get around the city, it could be worth checking out GoCar, a car-sharing service that allows people to rent cars and vans by the hour.

Under the service, which is available across different locations in Dublin and Cork, you are charged per kilometre and hour for your journeys. The cheapest time to rent a car is between 8pm and 8am, where the charge is €2.49 an hour and 45c per km driven.

If you hire a car between 8am and 8pm, the hourly charge is €4.99 – and the same 45c per km fee applies. It costs €40 to book a car for a day – as well as the per kilometre charge. There is a monthly fee of €5 and a one-off joining fee of €50, which includes €15 GoCar credit.

If you don't own a car or have decided that the parking charges don't warrant taking your car to work, this is a handy service – if you need a car for an hour or two during the week. Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus cars are among the models you can drive if you use GoCar.

You must have a full licence and cannot have more than five penalty points or any endorsements. If you have an accident while driving a GoCar, you'll have to pay up to €1,000 to cover damage.

If you're using an on-street GoCar in Dublin, you won't get hit with parking charges at any pay-and-display parking space. You don't need to worry about road tax, insurance, NCT or service costs either – as these are all covered. If you need a car for several hours a day, the cost of this will add up – so do the sums. has more details.
