Northern Irish sports retailer McMurray Sports has acquired Scottish rival Gilmour Sports. The deal, which is for an undisclosed amount, will give the family-owned sports retailer its first physical presence in Dublin, as well as taking over Gilmour Sports online store.

The company, which operates the Total Hockey website, is owned by brothers Alan and Steven McMurray.

The success of its website, Total Hockey, has meant that the company has customers from as far away as Japan and the US.

Gilmour Sports was founded in 1987, and has established itself as one of Europe's leading field hockey specialists.

The investment has been backed by Ulster bank.

Virgin Media win for Coroflo

Coroflo, a digital startup that has developed a breastfeeding-assistance monitoring system, has won the Virgin Media Business Voom Tour mini-pitch competition at the TechConnect Live event in Dublin.

The company’s prize is €6,000 and an opportunity to meet Richard Branson to discuss their business ideas over brunch later this year. Coroflo, which is led by Rosanne Longmore, has patented a nipple shield and app that assists the breastfeeding process. It monitors the milk flow from mother to baby, providing mothers with accurate details of how much breast milk an infant has consumed.

The Voom Tour is the first time that the business pitching competition, has hit the road in Ireland.

€30k funding for startup

Opening.io, a digital startup which uses machine learning and artificial intelligence to support recruitment processes, has secured €30,000 in follow-on investment at NDRC’s investor day. The firm, which enables recruiters to place the right people faster and more efficiently by automating the pre-screening processes, fended off competition from eight other companies, all of which were pitching to a panel of investors. NDRC provides digital startups with an integrated offering of capital, experience, and expertise, aimed at building a business that can attract investment and grow.
