Consumers have been warned that they are exposing themselves to pitfalls when buying insurance online.
The downsides of buying home, motor and travel insurance often do not emerge until there is a claim, when it is too late, according to the Professional Insurance Brokers Association (PIBA).
The chief operations officer of PIBA Rachel Doyle said: "There are subtleties and increasing complexity involved in insurance products.
"You could, when you need to make a claim, find that your policy is voided on the basis that you did not give a fulsome enough answer to a particular question or did not follow very detailed claims procedures."
Some people have a tendency to be economical with the truth when buying online, while they are more likely to be honest face to face, PIBA said. It denied that it was trying to scare customers away from online insurance, which has taken business from brokers.
