Thousands of Three mobile customers will be refunded after 'double charging'

Customers over-charged by mobile phone operator Three have been told they will be refunded by tomorrow.

Some 8,000 customers of the mobile phone company were double charged on Tuesday.

They had direct debits processed twice.

Now the telecoms company has sent text messages to customers saying: “Following yesterday’s technical banking error, you will be refunded by tomorrow morning.

“Apologies and thanks for your patience.”

It is understood the mistake was made by an international bank that sent out a file twice to banks here seeking payments on behalf of Three Ireland.

Three, which took over rival operator 02 in 2015, has some two million customers in this country.

The company had said: “Due to a technical error, duplicate direct debit payments were requested from a small number of customers.

“Three is working with its bank to resolve this issue as soon as possible. All impacted customers have been contacted and duplicate direct debits will be refunded accordingly.”
