Step 1

Check what your options are. There are three websites where you can compare broadband services, whether it's a standalone service or bundled with phone or TV. Comreg's Callcosts.ie website allows you to enter details of your phone and broadband usage to see how they compare, while Bonkers.ie and Switcher.ie are

simpler to use with easy price comparisons. They also display details of special offers and discounts that may be available.

Step 2

If you had signed up to a contract anytime in the last 18 months, it's usually best to wait until your contract ends before switching otherwise you could face early exit penalties for breaking it. One exception to this rule is if your provider has told you about a price increase - you can exit a contract within 30 days of getting this notice.

Do advise your old provider before you begin the switch, as they may offer you a better deal to stay with them. Some providers may require one month's notice of cancellation, so you should check this.

Step 3

To switch a home phone service, you will need to know your Universal Account Number (UAN), which you can find on a recent bill.

Step 4

Contact your new provider by phone or online to request the switch and they will give you an appointed date. If you are getting any new cable installed to your home, this may take up to a week but usually less.
