'We will never travel without insurance again'

WE were unfortunate enough to be caught up in the air travel chaos caused by the Icelandic volcano eruption, which began two days after we began our short holiday in France.
We didn't have travel insurance on this occasion, although I don't remember exactly why we chose not to.
On previous trips we would sometimes have opted for a single-trip policy, but sometimes not. I think it depended on what we were doing.
But after this trip, my wife and I agreed that we would no longer travel overseas without some form of travel insurance, or at least strongly considering it.
We fully understand that a typical policy would probably not have covered us for the flight cancellation and the considerable costs of the alternative arrangements we had to make to get home via land and sea.
After all, the chances are that any insurer we picked would have refused to pay out. It's also not clear if a typical policy would have covered us for the possibility of having to cancel the outward flight because our daughter fell ill two days before our scheduled departure with a vomiting bug.
Happily, she recovered on the day of the flight, but a vomiting bug may not constitute a 'serious illness' -- the term used in most policy wordings regarding cancellations or curtailments.
But for the sake of the €30-odd it would have cost, it's a relatively small price to pay for some peace of mind given all the other things that could have gone wrong (and which seem to happen more frequently now), particularly with small children in tow.
So we'll be taking out travel insurance from now on.
Although not until we study the Ts and Cs (terms and conditions) carefully first.
