Surviving the Recession

'They tortured me with phone calls every day'

HEAVILY pregnant Jackie (not her real name) fell behind on her MBNA credit card payments when she was laid off from her job last year.

"I had an MBNA credit card with a limit of €1,400. They cancelled my card last year for not making full payments and I am unemployed and broke.

"I told them I lost my job. I had payment protection insurance on the credit card, but they would not pay out. I was late by three to four days on a payment. They were ringing six times a day -- all different callers.

"They demanded a laser [debit card] payment to be made to pay off the credit card. They wanted to know when I was going to make the payment."

She owed €1,300, and the minimum payment was €30- €40. She was racking up interest of €20 a month.

She also incurred late payment fees of €15 every time she missed a payment.

"I told them I was waiting on the children's allowance. They asked me to pay that evening. They also started sending me texts and leaving voicemails on my mobile. They were torturing me with phone calls."

She missed payments three months in a row.

"It was a constant bombardment."

Her situation has now been resolved.
