How to take the pain out of claiming relief

IF you're one of those people who would rather stick pins in your eyes than endure the perceived drudgery of doing anything tax related, the good news is that there is an incredibly easy, quick and painless way to apply for tax reliefs online.
The Revenue's PAYE Anytime is an online service that allows PAYE employees to manage their own tax affairs, including applying for tax credits and tax reliefs.
The service was launched in 2006, but its popularity rose significantly after 2008, when the Revenue introduced and publicised a new registration process.
By the end of 2008, the number of registered users had doubled to 320,000 compared to the previous year. Today, there are just over 500,000 registered users.
Users can also view their tax credit certificates, reallocate credits between spouses, and declare extra income, although it is still used primarily to apply for tax credits and reliefs, a spokeswoman said.
While the Revenue is clearly pleased with the popularity of PAYE Anytime, a spokeswoman was keen to stress that it was not complacent.
"With over 500,000 registered users out of a possible two million, the challenge is to both increase the numbers registered for PAYE Anytime as well increase the activity of those already registered," she said.
