HOW much can you save by cycling to work?

If you normally take the train, bus or car to work, how much could you save by using a bicycle over the course of five years?

If you live in Castleknock and take the train to Dublin city centre and back five days a week, you would pay €817.80 per year. This is assuming you commute to work for 47 out of 52 weeks in the year.

If you live in Douglas in Cork and bus into Cork city centre for work, it would be €573.40 a year.

If we say that a decent bicycle and equipment will cost around €500, then the savings for the Castleknock rail commuter would amount to around €3,500 over five years.

For the Douglas bus commuter, the savings would be €2,300 over five years.

It's hard to quantify exactly the savings over using a car, but they are likely to be considerably more.

Even if you take out the costs of insurance, servicing, and repairs, just consider the fuel costs for a six-mile, traffic-gridlocked return trip to work by car five days a week.

And don't forget the costs of finding somewhere to park, if your employer doesn't provide free parking.
