This week with the Bank Holiday close enough to touch, the Smart Spender takes on a decidedly outdoors theme.

Carry your lunch in style

This vintage bicycle design lunch bag is foil-lined, closes with a zip, and has two carrying handles. It's the perfect practical way to keep your lunch cool during the day. What's more, it's made from recycled plastic bottles so you're also doing your bit to stay eco-friendly. Priced at €5.75 (excluding delivery), it's available from www.dotcomgiftshop.com

Visit an OPW Heritage Site for free

Next Wednesday being the first Wednesday of the month, you can visit all OPW-managed heritage sites for free. Tickets are allocated on a first come, first served basis so get there early to make sure you get entry. There are plenty of interesting sites to visit all year around, including Kilkenny Castle, Clonmacnoise (Offaly), The Rock of Cashel (Tipperary, pictured), John F Kennedy Arboretum (Wexford), and Glendalough Visitor Centre (Wicklow). Interestingly, many of the seasonal heritage sites (Tintern Abbey and Nenagh Castle for example) have now reopened since the beginning of April and subsequently are included in the list. For a full list of sites, opening information etc, visit www.heritageireland.ie

The Irish Landmark Trust is a non-profit organisation that finds unusual properties that are in need of conservation, and gives them new life. Since 1992 they've been turning historic buildings into unique self-catering holiday accommodation. There are some truly unusual places available to let such as a number of lighthouses, castles and towers. If you keep an eye on their website on Thursdays, you can snap up a last-minute bargain as certain properties that have not been let for the weekend are discounted for last-minute stays by as much as 20%. You'll find more information on last-minute availability on their website www.irishlandmark.com and you might also be interested in their free weekend of learning in Portumna Castle from Saturday 7th-Sunday 8th of May next which includes two days of interactive talks on the history, maintenance, and repair of old buildings along with free demonstrations.

If you go down to Littlewoods today, you're in for a big surprise

Holding 3.5 litres, with a secure lid along with carrying handle and a dispensing tap, this drinks dispenser should come in handy for camping trips and garden parties. It costs €21 from Littlewoods who deliver nationwide. See www.littlewoodsireland.ie for availability and ordering.

Smoking hot BBQs

If you want to stay on trend with cooking outdoors this summer, then you don't just want a regular barbecue - you'll want one with a smoker attached. You could pay big money for a Weber barbecue or Big Green Egg, both of which are outstanding products but very pricey, or you could pick this up for €79.99 from Aldi today. It has been specially designed to smoke meat and fish while they cook, to add a depth of flavour. The main barbecue also comes with two cooking grills and a thermometer in the lid. See www.aldi.ie for the full specifications and it's available nationwide today while stocks last.
