FRIDAY 13th may be considered unlucky by the superstitious, but homes with that door number are cheaper.

It costs €4,335 less to buy number 13 in an estate or road then it does to buy the property next door, research from Daft.ie shows.

But superstitions also mean 10pc fewer transactions take place on Friday 13th when that happens in a month.

Economist at Trinity College Dublin and author of the Daft.ie report Ronan Lyons said: “We often think of housing markets as being simply about cold laws of supply and demand.

“But while these are the top-level forces at work, there are lots of quirks of human behaviour that affect any individual property or transaction.”

Dr Lyons said our superstitions appear to affect not only prices - with properties numbered 13 cheaper than the average - but also quantities, with fewer transactions on a Friday the 13th than on other Fridays.

The superstition does not stop there, as nearly one in five of us would try to avoid buying a property at number 13.
