On the market: Three in the Galway Gaeltacht
Some 20 kilometres west of Galway City is the tourist mecca of Spiddal. Darby's Cottage - reportedly the former home of a man called Darby Walsh - is a restored thatched house there on 1.1 acres at Baile Eamoinn.
The ground floor has a central living area with a huge fireplace containing a solid-fuel stove. The country-style kitchen is opposite, and there's a bedroom either side. There are also two bathrooms on the ground floor, one with a bath. The third bedroom is reached from a stairs behind the chimney, and there's also a mezzanine loft up a set of steps from the living area, for use as an office or whatever you like.
The stone-walled site is close to the village and to Galway Bay, and the garden includes some sheds and a greenhouse, a lawn and a sunken patio. There's also a paddock at the back. It's for sale for €280,000 with Galway Real Estate (091) 423 332.
DORMER AT CASLA BAY
The village of Casla, between Inverin and Carraroe, is the headquarters of Raidio na Gaeltachta. It sits on the shores of Casla Bay, and from the rear of this detached house in the village, you have a clear view of the water.
It's a dormer bungalow, 2,599 sq ft in size. On the ground floor there's a dining room with nine-foot ceilings, a lounge opening to a conservatory at the front, and an open-plan kitchen/family room spanning the full length of the house and giving onto a patio at the back.
There's also a utility room and guest toilet on the ground floor. Upstairs there are four bedrooms, with the master bedroom ensuite.
The grounds have been landscaped with mature trees, lawns, raised flowerbeds and two water features, as well as the patio taking advantage of the view.
The auctioneer is Michelle Burke in Galway (091) 423 384 and the asking price is €495,000.
BIG BLUE ON COAST ROAD
If you see a massive, seven-bedroom house in the heart of the Gaeltacht, you can usually safely assume it has something to do with the learning of the Irish language.
Sure enough, the big blue house at Cartronkeel, near Inverin, Co Galway, was once used as a student guesthouse for one of the Irish colleges at Inverin, where there are several.
The house, on the main coast road that runs west from Galway, dates from the 1940s but has been updated since then.
The living room on the ground floor still has a traditional stone fireplace. There is also a kitchen/dining room, family room, and sun lounge.
One bedroom is on the ground floor; the other six are upstairs and three of them are ensuite. There's also a basement with garage, workshop and offices, and the site spans 1.11 acres.
DNG Martin O'Connor in Oughterard is the agent (091) 866 708 and the asking price is €225,000.
