Glin Castle was the ancestral home of Desmond FitzGerald, the 29th Knight of Glin, who died in 2011. FitzGerald had three daughters, but no sons, and so the title died with him. The family is now selling with some sadness, but feels unable to devote the time or resources that keeping Glin would require.

The 700-year-old castle on the banks of the Shannon comes with an estate of 380 acres that includes a working dairy farm and beautiful gardens most recently overseen by FitzGerald's daughter, Catherine, pictured right, a landscape architect who is married to the actor, Dominic West, star of The Wire and more recently seen in Sky Atlantic's The Affair.

Desmond FitzGerald was the head of the Irish Georgian Society and devoted his life to the upkeep of the castle, which is furnished with a fine collection of art and antiques. FitzGerald was quite the mover and shaker in his day, and visitors to Glin over the years have included Mick Jagger and Marianne Faithfull.

While the original Longhouse dates from the 14th Century, the castle was extended in the 1780s. The great hall, with its ornate Corinthian columns and Adam-style ceiling decorated with shamrocks, is made for entertaining on a grand scale, and the house also features a magnificent double-flying staircase and an orginal Bossi fireplace. There is over 1,908 sqm of living space, and the property was operated for a period as a country house hotel. There is obvious potential for it to be used in this way again, or as a spectacular family home.
