Fortified family home
Parts of Cloghan Castle in Banagher, Co Offaly date back 600 years, when the land was captured by the famous prince and clan chief, Eoghan of the O'Maddens - a noted builder of castles of stone and wood.
Over the years the castle has seen plenty of action and was occupied by both Cromwellians and Jacobites. Most recently, Cloghan has been used as a family home, located in a completely private setting surrounded by parkland. With guard towers, 300 yards of high stone walls, and a two-storied great hall with an immense carved mantelpiece, there is no denying that Cloghan is the real deal.
