Parts of Ballybroder House and Castle in Loughrea, Co Galway date from the 16th century when it was a stronghold of the Burkes, one of the 14 tribes of Galway. Ballybroder sits on 9.5 acres, mainly in pasture, and there is permission to renovate the castle and transform it into a 929 sqm residence - a serious project requiring energy and deep pockets.
The Tower House has a spiral stair on the north-east corner, and at the vaulted third-storey level, there is a passage in the north wall leading to the original latrine. Beside the tower house is a 19th-Century period property, also in need of renovation.
