WEDDING BELLS: William and Kate’s wedding cost more than €25m to stage in 2011, and cost the UK economy an estimated €6bn in lost working time. But the addition of a young woman to the royal stable is worth many billions more in tourist revenue gained, say UK analysts. Still, I wouldn’t fancy trying to write a policy against it

Wedding insurance: The more superstitious brides out there might not want to tempt fate by taking out this policy, but as you'll probably never spend as much on one day, it might be worth considering.

Most policies cover cancellation in the event of a death/illness of a close relative, or illness of the bride or groom. You may also be protected if any of your pre-booked wedding suppliers, or the hotel, goes bust, or if your bridal attire is damaged. But read the small print, as policies and the amount they cover vary.

Hire car excess

You've still time to book that holiday overseas, and hire a car while you're there. Hundreds of people are getting stung when they land with car hire excess charges (the amount you are responsible to pay towards repair costs if the rental vehicle suffers any damage), so get it before you go. How much for a VW Golf diesel for seven days from Malaga Airport?
