With a pre-paid card you just spend money you have in the bank
IT is more than two years now since Joanne Connolly decided that she and her credit card should part company.
"I found the charges and the interest rate very high. My interest rate for purchases was 19pc.
"I decided: 'I actually don't need this in my life'," the Roundwood, Co Wicklow resident explained.
She resolved to use her Laser debit card instead, happy with the fact that you can only spend money you have in the bank with that card.
But over time she found that many websites run from outside the country did not recognise the Laser card.
So she signed up for an O2 Moneycard, a sort of pre-paid Visa card. Ms Connolly is the mother of Billy (6) and Eoin (4).
She works part-time as an image consultant, helping people improve their dress sense.
This means she buys a lot online and she says her new prepaid 02 Moneycard works well for this.
"I like buying things online, especially on UK sites. They have amazing stuff that you can't buy here."
She also finds the pre-paid card handy for use abroad. She pre-loaded the card to the value of €300 when she holidayed in Portugal recently.
All this means she has no intention of going back to the expensive habit of having a credit card.
