Shopping vouchers and discounts now deployed in energy price war
Families are being tempted to sign up to Bord Gáis for their electricity and gas supply with a deal that will see them getting discounts, vouchers for a leading supermarket chain and a free gas boiler service.
The British-owned energy company is offering discounts of up to 12pc, a €75 Tesco voucher and free service. The move comes ahead of the expensive back-to-school period.
But despite the "sweeteners" on offer, consumers will still be able to get cheaper electricity and gas from other suppliers.
New customers who move to Bord Gáis for their electricity supply are being offered 10pc off the standard price, plus a €75 Tesco voucher.
Gas customers who move to the company will get 8pc off the standard tariff, plus a free gas boiler service.
And those who move to Bord Gáis for both electricity and gas will get 12pc off electricity, 10pc off gas, a €75 Tesco voucher and a free service.
Existing electricity customers are being offered 12pc off electricity, 7pc off gas and a €75 Tesco voucher if they sign up for a year.
Existing gas customers are being offered 12pc off electricity, 10pc off gas, and a free boiler service.
All the deals are on condition that customers sign up for what is called "level pay". This is where you pay the same amount each month based on an estimate of what the company expects your annual bill to be. Customers must sign up before September 6 to get the deals.
Energy expert Simon Moynihan of Bonkers.ie said the new dual-fuel deal will cost an average household €1,959 a year.
"It's a saving of €216 a year over paying standard rates. It is not the cheapest deal in the marketplace right now, but it's the incentives that make this one attractive."
He said customers signing up from now until September 6 will receive a €75 Tesco voucher.
"Bord Gais Energy says they'll post this out to customers within five days of them successfully signing up. So it should be there in time to help with some of the back-to-school bills."
He added that when times are tight, spending on things such as a gas boiler service gets put on the long finger, so this may be attractive to some customers.
