Save by setting out game plan and sticking to it
Beat the supermarkets at the psychology game and follow the tips below to make sure you don't spend more than you should, or even spend less than you normally do.
1 If you're a woman, be like a man. Studies of shopping behaviour have shown time and again that men don't hang around in supermarkets. They just get what they want and go. The longer you stay, the more likely you are to be tempted.
2 Don't shop when you're hungry. You've heard this one before; it needs no explanation.
3 Be wary of special offers or sale items. Special offers can be good value, but you need to ask if you need it in the first place.
4Make a list and stick to it. Just buy what is on the list and ask yourself if you really need something that's not on it before you add it to your basket.
5 Leave food shopping to the last minute. Some say that if you run a number of errands at once, but leave food shopping to last, you'll have less time to spend on it and be more likely to stick to your list.
6 Avert your eyes at the checkout. Find some way to distract yourself from all the attractive but mostly frivolous items such as sweets, chocolate and magazines. Talk to the checkout person or people in the queue.
