Me and my money: Derby Browne
Spending to save became this singer's new habit after her car went up in smoke
SINGER Derby Browne found that maybe she should have paid for that new windscreen on her car, despite the €500 bill.
"I bought a second-hand car last year for the first time. After a month, the windscreen wiper broke -- €500 to repair it -- which I refused to pay until I did some research.
"But I had been so busy, I never got around to doing the research, and for the year I drove around leaning to the left whenever it rained, which gave me a migraine and made my passengers nervous," she said.
"Sometimes we would have to stop on the country road on the way to a gig, pull into a farm entrance, and all get out to clean it with tissues and water. I literally couldn't see where I was going. As soon as we'd get back in, a truck would pass and splash us with mud all over again. I used to pray it wouldn't rain -- which was a long shot to ask that of Ireland. A week after the warranty expired, I smelled smoke coming from the bonnet, and that was the end of the car.
"My best-ever buy was my Babyliss heated rollers. They are amazing. I no longer go to hair dressers for blow-dries. These little babies do the trick.
"Petrol, car park fees and mobile phone bills are my biggest ongoing waste of money.
"If I won €5m in the lottery, I would buy a long spa holiday in St Lucia with friends, and while I'm relaxing, I'd think about what I was going to do with it."
