Health cover not set in stone

PEOPLE with private health cover can change or cancel their cover at any time, according to Dermot Goode of the website healthinsurancesavings.ie.
Consumers can let their cover lapse by up to 13 weeks with no new penalties on re-joining, said Mr Goode.
"While health insurance is in effect an annual contract, in reality you can change/cancel your cover at any time. You also get full credit for your term with your previous insurer," he said.
Each health insurer must renew your cover regardless of how many claims you had in the previous insurance year, with no penalties or conditions attached (Open Enrolment & Community Rating). There was no problem splitting your cover, ie having multiple people insured on your policy but on different levels of cover, he added.
