Ditch credit card for cash
PAYING for goods and services with cash or a debit card is one of the most effective ways to get back to living within your means, according to Bob Quinn of Myrecession.ie.
Behavioural economics had identified credit as being a "gentler" way to spend your money, Mr Quinn said.
Parting with your credit card to buy that LCD TV is a lot less painful than handing over the cash. One study showed that shoppers did not remember what they had spent on their credit cards, while those that used cash did.
"Adjusting to a lifestyle adopted by our parents and grandparents may seem antiquated, but it worked for them and it can work for you," Mr Quinn advised.
