Banks are called to account
BANKS were warned yesterday not to deny people with intellectual disabilities the option to open bank accounts.
Consumer director of the Financial Regulator Mary O'Dea said banks and other financial providers must provide access to financial services under the provisions of the statutory Consumer Protection Code.
Mrs O'Dea -- at the launch for a guide to money for people with intellectual disabilities, called 'Making Decisions About Money' -- said anyone unable to open a bank account should first complain to the bank manager, then, if they are unhappy with the response, to the regulator.
