If you haven't done it already, the May Bank Holiday is a good time to get stuck into the garden and make it presentable for the summer. Once the hard work is done, you can reward your efforts with a trip to Aldi to check out its new range of barbecue gear and garden furniture and accessories, in store from tomorrow.

There's a six-piece garden furniture set for €79.99, a kettle charcoal barbecue for €24.99 and a Mexican-style chimenea, left, for €39.99 to keep you warm when things get chilly. There are also smart wooden planters for €12.99 and a six-pack of herb plants (sage, parsley, chives, mint, oregano and thyme) that will get you growing on the smallest of balconies for €4.99. And if you're thinking of a picnic, Aldi also has smart wicker picnic baskets for €39.99 and disposable barbecues for €2.99.

Once you've got the garden looking good, it's time to invite friends over to enjoy it. This time of year is ideal for casual entertaining - think in terms of a few glasses of wine and some tasty tapas rather than anything more formal. Lidl has impressive-looking whole Serrano gammon joints, right, available for €59.99, all you need is a sharp knife, some good bread and perhaps some delicious Spanish cheeses to turn it into a fiesta at home. Phone Lidl's customer services line on 1800 347 447 between 8am and 7pm, Monday to Friday, to order.

To wash it down, catch the last few bargains in SuperValu's Italian wine sale, which finishes today. The easy-drinking Fico Grande Sangiovese Romagna is just €8, while the Sopra Sasso Amarone, left, at €20 is a proper treat. SuperValu has 33pc off all meat from the butcher's counter until May 6, so pick up a few juicy rib-eye steaks to go with the wine. From May 7, SuperValu has special deals on a range of 25 different barbecue meats, with any two just €6.

Meanwhile, Tesco's steak and wine sale runs from today until May 5, with 33pc off all steaks at the butcher's counter, including Tesco Finest striploin, sirloin and rib-eye, and matching wines such as Trapiche Winemakers Malbec and Marques de Riscal Reserva down to €10 and €15 respectively.

If the BBQ is not your thing, until the end of May, Waterford Stanley has €500 off its 100cm Deluxe Dual Fuel and Supreme Deluxe Induction Hob range cookers. There's also a Facebook competition to win a Stanley Supreme range cooker worth €3500.

For those who'd prefer to get out and about, the long weekend is a chance to dust down the bicycle that may have been languishing in the shed since last summer and hit the road. From Sunday, May 3, Aldi has a new range of cycling gear, including men's cycling shirts and shorts (€9.99 each), ultra-light cycling jacket gilet (€13.99, pictured right), adult and children's bike helmets (€9.99), and premium cycling shoes (€29.99). There are also bike rucksacks, cycling gloves, and sunglasses in the range.
