Me and my money: Mary Kelly
'I can buy half a wardrobe for €50 and then I'll see a top in a boutique and spend €200
Tuesday November 24 2009
"My biggest expense at the moment is clothes. I have a strange addiction to really expensive tops. I can purchase half a wardrobe for €50 and then I'll see a top in the window of a boutique and spend €200 on it. I'm always on my way home when it happens; I've almost escaped. I have some really nice tops though," she said.
"I've had a few spending mistakes, most of which I've inflicted on Oxfam, but my biggest one would have to be a collection of flights to the States and Australia. Having handed over the best part of €2,000, I got a call offering me a part in the Gate. The gig, of course, clashed with the trip. I got a third of my money back.
"I have a savings plan, I have a direct debit from my current account and it transfers a small amount every week. It adds up and I don't notice it going.
"It's one of those accounts that when you withdraw money, you lose bonuses. Needless to say I'm bonus-less.
"Eating out is probably my greatest ongoing waste of money. Although enjoyable, four times a week is a bit excessive.
"At the moment, I'm paying for broadband for an apartment I no longer live in. It's not exactly a fortune but it's definitely a waste as the apartment is vacant.
"If I won the Lotto, I would buy a cottage by the sea and then a dozen yaks for a Tibetan village. I'm an actor so I get plenty of time off, so probably more money would be better for me if I had the choice."
- Mary Kelly stars in 'A Doll's House' at The Helix in Dublin until November 27.
