MASSIVE variations in the prices charged for having a domestic gas boiler serviced have emerged from a new survey.

The research found that the cost nationwide averages €73 for a boiler service carried out by a registered contractor, but some companies are charging up to €180.

Bord Gáis Energy emerged as one of the most expensive, with prices ranging from €99 to €108, according to the survey by Onlinetradesmen.ie, a listing for qualified trade professionals.

An additional Bord Gáis Energy option offered to householders, which includes parts and labour, costs up to €180.

Ted Laverty, chief executive of Onlinetradesmen.ie, said costs vary between urban and rural areas.

Dublin and surrounding counties are the most expensive when it comes to the cost of having a domestic gas boiler serviced.

"Our findings have shown a large discrepancy in prices charged by service providers for a standard boiler service," Mr Laverty said.

"While it is important that property owners get their boiler serviced once a year, they also need to shop around to ensure they are not getting ripped off. With the sector now regulated, all contractors must be registered by law, so it is easy to compare prices."

An average gas boiler service should take just over one hour, with a series of standard checks being carried out, he said.

A basic service will consist of a full check of the boiler with the contractor assessing the physical condition of the appliance, installation pipework, air vents and any flues for deterioration.

Poisoning

Regular gas boiler servicing ensures the safety of the appliance and reduces the potential for carbon monoxide poisoning in the home, Mr Laverty said.

A spokesman for Bord Gáis Energy insisted the company offers the best value in the market, with the standard price of €159 to cover your boiler for parts and labour.

"With Bord Gáis Energy, as well as a comprehensive 19-point service from an RGII (Register of Gas Installers of Ireland) registered boiler service engineer, we are the only boiler service provider to offer consumers a flexible range of payment options including one-off payment or payments via direct debit," he said.
