Objects of Desire: Ian Dempsey
The popular radio presenter tells Andrea Smith about his favourite purchases
George Clooney is right when he says, "Nespresso. What else?" It's a brilliant coffee, which tastes great and has a massive variety of strengths and flavours. Plus the Nespresso machines (Magimix coffee maker, €149, Debenhams.ie) are idiot-proof, which is handy for me at 5am.
When it comes to underwear, I'm very fussy. I always buy my trunk boxers with thick waistbands in Next (men's four-pack print hipsters, €34, Nextdirect.com) and I always like to get brand new ones whenever there's a special occasion!
With me, it's all about the chase. I've bought everything from leaf blowers (Florabest 3,000w electric leaf blower, €49.99, Lidl.ie) drills (18V ROK Li-Ion cordless drill, €79.99, WoodiesDIY.com) and steam cleaners (Karcher SC2 Steam cleaner, €175, LittlewoodsIreland.ie), through the years. but sadly I rarely actually use any of them.
I've dropped my iPhone too many times, far more than I care to remember. I've had it fixed in LA, New York, The Algarve and many times in Dublin. I think that the best fixer in Dublin is Smashlab on Duke Street (iPhone 6 screen replacement, €209, Smashlab.ie). I have now finally given in and purchased a protective cover (Panzerglass 1012 transparent screen protector shield for the iPhone 6/6S, €35.99, Pixmania.ie) and I hope that this will do the trick.
My wife Ger bought me a Sonos wireless speaker for Christmas. I was so impressed, I have bought three more since then (Sonos Play 5 wireless multi-room speaker, €619, Currys.ie) so we have controllable sound wirelessly all over the house. The smart speaker system gives truly incredible sound anywhere in the house via wi-fi, and it's worth every penny, in my opinion.
I'm a fan of Château Miraval Rosé wine from Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's vineyard in Provence (750ml bottle, €29.50, Terroirs.ie). Whether it's the image it conjures up or the actual wine itself, it brings you to a different place.
I always buy winter clothes for the TopFlight/Today FM Austrian ski trip every year. I have a very warm Black Columbia ski jacket with Omni-Heat in it, which keeps the cold out and the heat in (Platinum Plus 860 TurboDown jacket, €199,95, Columbia Sportswear.ie) I'm sure my fellow skiers are sick of looking at me in this jacket (which I'm wearing in this photo with my son Shane) as I've had it for three years. I'm very reluctant to let go of it, as it's almost like a lagging jacket or a mobile duvet.
The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show, Today FM, weekdays, 7-9 am. The show will be broadcast live from the Topflight/Today FM Austrian ski trip from Jan 25-29.
How to get Ian's favourite things on a smaller budget
We know Iano has a thing for Brangelina's vino, but maybe he'd like to sample a celebrity offering with a local flavour. Graham Norton's Own Sauvignon Blanc, €14.99, is exclusive to SuperValu and Centra, and most commendably, all of his proceeds from it go to the Dogs Trust charity.
Ian lifts the nation's spirits every morning with his good-humoured banter and hilarious Gift Grub sketches. He'll probably think these jocks are pants, but we're sure that wearing these Red Herring 'Smiley World' print trunks (two-pack, €14.40, Debenhams.ie) would cheer any morning grouch up.
He loves it and it has served him well, but could we possibly prise Ian out of his trusty old ski jacket and into this Men's Quest insulated jacket (€140, TheNorthFace.ie), which is hooded, waterproof and warm? It comes in six colours, and he would certainly look the part when he swishes in style down the piste in it.
He needs to be alive at an ungodly hour, so no wonder our Ian needs coffee. The Nescafé Dolce Gusto Melody 3 by De'Longhi pod coffee machine machine has over 30 hot and cold drinks to choose from, and is a snip at only €44.99 from Argos.ie.
