REVEINA Carroll feared she would have to drop her health insurance, such was the increase in the monthly cost of the plan she was on.

When the monthly cost went from €55 to €155, she decided it was time to act.

But she feared she would be forced into a waiting period for cover if she moved to different cover or away from her provider, Aviva.

"The cost of the package was increasing every year, but this year it went up by €40 a month, so I decided to act," says the Birr, Co Offaly, resident.

"I was watching the pennies, but I did not want to get rid of my health insurance, so I shopped around."

She found herself a better plan with GloHealth, which is actually cheaper than the previous plan.

Her Zest+ plan with GloHealth gives a high level of cover and also offers the new GloDoc service.

This involves unlimited access to a GP through online face-to-face consultations.

And she is not subject to any waiting periods for coverage under the new plan.

Her experience shows the importance of phoning up health insurers and comparing plans and the different providers, she feels.

Ms Carroll (right), who works in Birr Golf Shop, is in her 40s and feels it is important to have health insurance.

And in the last two years, she has begun to shop around for better value home and motor insurance.

"I have become savvy about a whole lot of things. I watch the pennies and try to get the best deals," she says.
