Penneys follows French expansion with US breakthrough

The march of Penneys fashion continues internationally with the Primark chain expanding into the US, opening in Boston at the end of next year.

They will be taking on retail giants like Walmart and Target and buoyed by the success of their value fashion brand's success across nine countries in Europe, it was inevitable that they would explore the North American market.

Associated British Foods (“ABF”), the international food, ingredients and retail group who own the value fashion chain today confirmed  that Primark will be opening stores in the north east of the USA.

Primark which is run out of its HQ in Dublin where the Penneys brand started in Mary Street in 1969 have enjoyed considerable success in Ireland, the UK, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, Holland and  Austria.

They opened in France in December, have over 270 stores across Europe and, after extensive research it has been decided to take the concept to consumers in the USA.

Primark has signed a lease for some 70,000 sq ft of selling space in the historic Burnham Building, which is currently being renovated, at Downtown Crossing, in the heart of Boston, Massachusetts.

The site was previously home to Boston’s famous Filene’s Department Store. The Primark store is planned to open towards the end of 2015 and negotiations are under way to open further stores in the north east, through to the middle of 2016.  The US stores will be supported by warehousing in the region
