With the arrival of the recession, have you cut back on any spending?

  • Go To

Like everyone else, we have definitely cut back on spending

What three things would you not be able to do without if you were tightening your belt?

Clothes, heating oil and my phone.

Do you shop in Lidl or Aldi?

Yes, we often shop in Lidl or Aldi. My wife Paula, who is a nutritionist and runs her own business, Food 4 Life, really likes their organic ranges.

What's your worst customer service experience?

Nothing too serious!!

What car do you drive and how much does it cost to fill up the petrol tank?

I drive a BMW 520D and it takes about €80 to fill, depending on price.

What was your first job and salary?

Working for the trainer, Noel Meade, in 1996 for the princely sum of £108 a week.

What would you like to achieve in work this year?

I never really set any goals as they are often unrealistic, especially in my job, I always just hope for some good winners and an injury-free year. These days, I ride as first jockey for the British racehorse trainer, Nicky Henderson. This gives me an Aladdin's Cave of riches from which to choose for the season ahead in Britain. I also ride freelance for a plethora of trainers in Ireland.

Do you have any family connection with business?

My family are all involved in the racing and horse business. My parents run Pelletstown Riding Centre in Co Meath, as well as training a few horses. My father Tucker had me sitting on a horse before I could walk, so horses have been around me from the moment I was old enough to have coherent thoughts. My brother Ross is a jockey and is based between Ireland and America; my sister Jill also rides as an amateur jockey; another sister, Sasha, is editor of the Horse World section in the Irish Field; and my other brother Norman is a farrier! It was my grandfather who bred Golden Miller -- still the only horse to win the Gold Cup and the Grand National in the same year.

Which businessman or woman do you most admire?

JP McManus -- what he has done from humble beginnings is amazing as is his generosity towards so many charities.

What was your best investment?

I bought a farm in 2003 which was good value and I really enjoy stocking it with some young horses and some cattle.

What's the biggest financial mistake you ever made?

My dad and I bought a lot of sheep when I bought my farm -- not a good idea!!

Do you know what interest rate you're paying on your mortgage?

I do and I'm fortunate to have been well advised.

Have you switched your bank or moved your mortgage in the last couple of years?

No.

If you won the Euromillions jackpot, what would you do with the money?

Go to the moon!!

What have you got in your wallet today?

Not a lot, mostly cards.

If you could design your own euro note, whose face would you put on it?

Bono.

What would you spend more money on each year? Petrol or restaurants.

Petrol unfortunately!

Have you ever been overcharged by a bank?

No.

Have you ever made an insurance claim?

Yes. I crashed a few cars in my youth.

How much is a bag of chips?

€2.
